Answer:

С. form chains or rings by bonding to itself and other atoms.

Explanation:

Carbon is an element in group 4 of the periodic table with unique bonding properties. Carbon posseses 4 valence electrons in its outer shell. This enables carbon to form covalent bonds with the atoms of other elements e.g. nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, hydrogen etc.

Carbon can also combine covalently with other carbon atoms i.e. C-C to form long chains and rings in a process called CATENATION. This unique property of carbon makes it the only element that can form so many different compounds.

Discuss the significance of assigning an atomic mass of exactly 12 amu to the carbon-12 isotope.
evablogger [386]

Answer:

Cabon-12 has same average atomic weight and mass number.

Explanation:

carbon-12 has average atomic weight 12 amu and mass number of 12.

amu represents average of mass of a nucleon.

As carbon-12 has same average atomic mass and mass number therefore carbon-12 is a good standard to determine average mass of a nucleon.

Again, abundance of carbon-12 isotope is almost equal to 99%. Therefore fluctuation of average atomic weight from 12 amu is very very low.

So, carbon-12 is taken as a standard to determine mass of a nucleon.

Hence atomic mass of carbon-12 is 12 amu.

The diagram shows Niels Bohr’s model of an atom.
PtichkaEL [24]

Answer:

Energy is absorbed, and an emission line is produced.

Explanation:

Electrons are present and revolving continuously in the orbits that are present around the nucleus. The energy of electron are fixed and unable to move to other orbits due to the strong attractive force of the proton which is present in the nucleus of the atom. If the electron wants to jump from the first energy level to the second energy level, so the electron has to absorb enough energy which can overcome the attractive force of proton.
