He pushed them together to have the most surface area when he was done, so that tells us he put the two smallest sides together.

Essentially, he put them end to end to make a really long prism. The two sides pressed together are both 3x4 so

2(3x4) = 2(12) = 24

Answer is 8

Work Shown:

f(x) = sqrt(5*x + 4)

f(12) = sqrt(5*12 + 4) ... replace every x with 12

f(12) = sqrt(60 + 4)

f(12) = sqrt( 64 )

f(12) = 8
