The answer is 1690. First find the amount of interest by a single investment by multiplying the investment amount by the percent interest in decimal form. Then calculate the total by adding up all the products of investment times interest. Matrices will allow to multiply two things together and add the products up all at the same time. So we need to find the investment matrix and interest matrix.

Investment matrix A (transposed)            = (a1 a2 a3) = (13,000 12,000 4,000)

Interest Matrix B                                       = (b1 b2 b3) = (0.05 0.06 0.08)

Amount of interest earned                        = a1b1 + a2b2 + a3b3

Amount of interest earned                        = (0.05) (13,000) + (0.06) (12,000) +                                                                                  (0.08)(4,000)

Amount of interest earned                        = 1690

Let the number of chickens = c.

Let the number of pigs = p.

A chicken has 1 head and 2 legs.

c number of chickens have c heads and 2c legs.

A pig has 1 head and 4 legs.

p number of pigs have p heads and 4p legs.

There are 40 heads.

Equation for heads:

c + p = 40

There are 110 legs.

Equation for legs:

2c + 4p = 110

System of equations:

c + p = 40

2c + 4p = 110

Solve the first equation of the system of equations for c:

c = 40 - p

Substitute 40 - p for c in the second equation:

2c + 4p = 110

2(40 - p) + 4p = 110

80 - 2p + 4p = 110

80 + 2p = 110

2p = 30

p = 15

Now substitute p = 15 in the first equation to find c.

c + p = 40

c + 15 = 40

c = 25

There are 25 chickens and 15 pigs.

To negatives equal a positive. Convert both of the mixed numbers into a improper fraction. Cross simplify 5 and 5, they both turn into one’s. Multiply and you should get 7/3 or 2 1/3.
