Arrange the following gases in order of decreasing density at STP. Ne, O2, F2, Cl3
kipiarov [429]

Answer: Cl₃ > F₂ > O₂ > Ne

Explanation:

1) All the gases are at the same temperature and pressure: STP (O°, 1 atm).

2) All the gases are represented by one molecule (or mole of molecules, it is the same for our puroposes).

3) As per Avogadro's law and the ideal gas equation, the same number of particles (of any gas) occupy the same volume at the same temperature and pressure.

For example, at STP the volume of 1 mol of gas is 22.4 liter.

4) Since, density is equal to mass / volume, and you assume the same number of molecules of each gas, the order of the densities is the same that the order of the molar masses.

5) Then, you just need to state the molar mass of each gas and order in decreasing order of molar mass to have the correct order for density.

6) Molar masses:

i) Ne: 20.180 g/mol

ii) O₂: 2× 15.999 g/mol = 31.998 g/mol

iii) F₂: 2×18.998 g/mol = 37.996 g/mol

iv) Cl₃: 3×35.453 g/mol = 106.359

7) Then the order is: 106.359 > 37.996 > 31.998 > 20.18 ⇒ is Cl₃ > F₂ > O₂ > Ne.

Note: the values calculate are not of densities but of molar masses. The order is what is the same.

How does the temperature of the air change with altitude?
TiliK225 [7]
As you increase in elevation, there is less air above you thus the pressure decreases. As the pressure decreases, air molecules spread out further (i.e. air expands) and the temperature decreases. If the humidity is at 100 percent (because it's snowing), the temperature decreases more slowly with height.

Calculate the number of grams of solute needed to make each of the following solutions:
AleksAgata [21]

Explanation:

(w/w) % : The percentage mass or fraction of mass of the of solute present in total mass of the solution.

w/w\%=\frac{\text{Mass of solute}}{\text{Mass of solution}}\times 100

1) 100 g of 0.500% (w/w) NaI

Mass of solution = 100 g

Mass of solute = x

Required w/w % of solution = 0.500%

0.500\%=\frac{x}{100 g}\times 100

x=\frac{0.500\times 100 g}{100}=0.500 g

0.500 grams of solute needed to make 100 g of 0.500% (w/w) NaI.

2) 250 g of 0.500% (w/w) NaBr

Mass of solution = 250 g

Mass of solute = x

Required w/w % of solution = 0.500%

0.500\%=\frac{x}{250 g}\times 100

x=\frac{0.500\times 250 g}{100}=1.25 g

1.25 grams of solute needed to make 250 g of 0.500% (w/w) NaBr

3) 500 g of 1.25% (w/w) glucose

Mass of solution = 500 g

Mass of solute = x

Required w/w % of solution = 1.25%

1.25\%=\frac{x}{500 g}\times 100

x=\frac{1.25\times 500 g}{100}=6.25 g

6.25 grams of solute needed to make 500 g of 1.25% (w/w) (glucose)

4) 750 g of 2.00% (w/w) sulfuric acid.

Mass of solution = 750 g

Mass of solute = x

Required w/w % of solution = 2.00%

2.00\%=\frac{x}{750 g}\times 100

x=\frac{2.00\times 750 g}{100}=15.0 g

15.0 grams of solute needed to make 750 g of 2.00% (w/w) sulfuric acid.
