Answer:

x = -1 and x = 5

Step-by-step explanation:

<em>What are the solutions of the equation (x – 3)² + 2(x – 3) -8 = 0? Use u substitution to solve.</em>

<em />

(x – 3)² + 2(x – 3) -8 = 0   -------------------------------------------------------(1)

To solve this problem, we will follow the steps below;

let u = x-3

we will replace x-3 by u in the given equation:

(x – 3)² + 2(x – 3) -8 = 0

u² + 2u -8 = 0  ----------------------------------------------------------- --------------(2)

We will now solve the above quadratic equation

find two numbers such that its product gives -8 and its sum gives 2

The two numbers are 4 and -2

That is; 4×-2 = -8    and 4+(-2) = 2

we will replace 2u by (4u -2u)  in equation (2)

u² + 2u -8 = 0

u² + 4u - 2u -8 = 0

u(u+4) -2(u+4) = 0

(u+4)(u-2) = 0

Either  u + 4 = 0

            u = -4

or

u-2 = 0

u = 2

Either u = -4    or u = 2

But  u = x-3

x = u +3

when u = -4

x = u + 3

x = -4 + 3

x=-1

when u = 2

x = u + 3

x = 2 + 3

x=5

Therefore, x = -1  and  x =5

x

What is 8n-(2n-3)=12 ?
bixtya [17]
Okay luv so let's solve this equation together:
8n-(2n-3)=12
simplify
8n+-1(2n-3)=12
8n+-1(2n)+(-1)(-3)=12
8n+-2n+3=12
(8n+-2n)+(3)=12 Combine like terms
6n+3=12
Then subtract from both sides
6n+3-3=12-3
6n=9
Then divide both sides by 6
6n/6=9/6
so...n=3/2

Dr Wellbee advised his patients to drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water everyday for every 50 pounds of weight. Kelby drank 168
BlackZzzverrR [31]
Kelby drank 168 glasses of water per week
i.e 24 glasses per day

Since 8  eight-ounce glass of water is for every 50 pounds.
1 eight-ounce glass is for = 50/8 pounds
and 24 glasses of water is for = 50*24/8
= 150pounds

So kelby probably weighs 150 pounds

Dennis and Ivy share some sweets between them in the ratio 7:4 Dennis got 42 sweets. How many does ivy get
MrRa [10]

Answer:

Ivy = 24

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

Dennis : Ivy = 7 : 4

Required

Determine the amount of sweet Ivy gets when Dennis = 42

We have:

Dennis : Ivy = 7 : 4 and

Dennis = 42

Substitute 42 for Dennis in Dennis : Ivy = 7 : 4

42 : Ivy = 7 : 4

Convert to fraction

\frac{42}{Ivy} = \frac{7}{4}

Cross Multiply:

Ivy * 7 = 42 * 4

Divide through by 7

\frac{Ivy * 7}{7} = \frac{42 * 4}{7}

Ivy = \frac{42 * 4}{7}

Ivy = 6* 4

Ivy = 24
