Answer:

2. Denote two pieces: x, y

x + y = 40

x = 2y + 10

=> 2y + 10 + y = 40 => 3y = 30 => y = 10 => x = 2 x 10 + 10 = 30

=> Solution: 10 and 30

3. Denote 4 consecutive number: 2k, 2k+2, 2k+4, 2k+6

(2k + 2k + 4) x 2 + 20 = 2 x (2k + 6)

=> 8k + 28 = 4k + 12

=> 4k = -16

=> k = -4

=> Solution: -8, -6, -4, -2

4. The number of shoppers after announcement :

It would be an average of about 8.00 (7.99 to be somewhat exact). You get this by dividing the total amount by 200, the dividing that by 363.

ANSWER

y   = 3 \pm \sqrt{21}

EXPLANATION

The quadratic equation is:

{y}^{2}  - 6y - 12 = 0

Group variable terms:

{y}^{2}  - 6y = 12

Add the square of half, the coefficient of y to both sides.

{y}^{2}  - 6y  + ( - 3) ^{2} = 12 + ( - 3) ^{2}

{y}^{2}  - 6y  + 9= 12 + 9

The LHS us now a perfect square trinomial:

{(y - 3)}^{2}= 21

Take square root:

y - 3 =  \pm \sqrt{21}

y = 3 \pm \sqrt{21}

The first choice is correct.
