Calculate the pH of a 0.20 M NH3/0.20 M NH4Cl buffer after the addition of 25.0 mL of 0.10 M HCl to 65.0 mL of the buffer.
kiruha [24]

Answer:

Explanation:

For pH of a buffer solution , the formula is

pH = pKa + log [ Base ] / [ conjugate acid ]

=   pKa + log [ NH₃ ] / [ NH₄⁺ ]

Ka = Kw / Kb

Kb for NH₄OH = 1.8 x 10⁻⁵

Ka = 10⁻¹⁴ / 1.8 x 10⁻⁵

= 5.6 x 10⁻¹⁰

pH = - log ( 5.6 x 10⁻¹⁰ ) + log 0.2 / 0.2

= 10 - log 5.6

= 9.25

Effect of addition of HCl

H⁺ of HCl will react with NH₃ to produce NH₄⁺

25 mL of .1 HCl = 2.5 mM of HCl

25 mL of .1 NH₄⁺ = 2.5 mM of NH₄⁺

65 mL of .2 M NH₃ = 13 mM of NH₃

65 mL of .2 M NH₄⁺ = 13 mM of NH₄⁺

NH₃ + H⁺ = NH₄⁺

NH₄⁺ formed = 2.5 + 13  mM

15.5 mM of NH₄⁺

NH₃ = 13 mM

Concentration of NH₃ = 13 / 90

Concentration of NH₄⁺ = 15.5 / 90

pH of final buffer mixture

= 9.6 + log 13 / 15.5

= 9.25 - .076

= 9.174

Consider the following reaction: A2 + B2 → 2AB ΔH = –321 kJ Bond energy (A2) = 1/2AB Bond energy (B2) =393 kJ/mol. What is the n
nirvana33 [79]

Answer: The numerical value for Bond energy of A_2 is -238 kJ/mol

Explanation:

The balanced chemical reaction is,

A_2+B_2(g)\rightarrow 2AB    \Delta H=-321kJ

The expression for enthalpy change is,

\Delta H=\sum [n\times B.E(reactant)]-\sum [n\times B.E(product)]

\Delta H=[(n_{A_2}\times B.E_{A_2})+(n_{B_2}\times B.E_{B_2}) ]-[(n_{AB}\times B.E_{AB})]

\Delta H=[(1\times x)+(1\times B.E_{B_2}) ]-[(2\times 2x)]

where,

n = number of moles

If B.E_{A_2}=x    B.E_{AB}=2x

Now put all the given values in this expression, we get

-321=[(1\times x)+(1\times 393)]-[(2\times 2x)]

x=-238kJ/mol

Therefore, the bond energy of A_2 is -238 kJ/mol

A gas occupies 0.67 L at 350 K. What temperature is required to reduce<br> the volume to 0.21 L *
hammer [34]

Answer:

109.7K

Explanation:

Using Charles law equation as follows;

V1/T1 = V2/T2

Where;

V1 = initial volume (L)

V2 = final volume (L)

T1 = initial temperature (K)

T2 = final temperature (K)

According to the information provided in this question;

V1 = 0.67L

V2 = 0.21L

T1 = 350K

T2 = ?

Using the formula above;

0.67/350 = 0.21/T2

0.001914 = 0.21/T2

0.001914T2 = 0.21

T2 = 0.21/0.001914

T2 = 109.7K
