Maria collected some stones at the beach. Now she wants to make a clear plastic container to display the stones. To plan the con

tainer, Maria decides that she must first find the volume of the stones. Maria had an aquarium that is shaped like a rectangular parish. It's 8 inches wide, 16 inches long and 10 inches high. Maria pours some water onto the aquarium. She finds that the water reaches to the height of 4 inches. Find the volume of the water in the aquarium. Next, Maria now puts the stones on the aquarium. She measures and finds that the water reaches to new height of 7 inches. Find the volume of the stones

Answer:

The volume of the stones is 382 cube inches.

Step-by-step explanation:

The dimensions of the aquarium are;

length = 16 inches

width = 8 inches

height = 10 inches

The height of the water in the aquarium = 4 inches

i. Volume of the water in the aquarium = length x width x height

                               = 16 x 8 x 4

                               = 512 cube inches

The volume of water in the aquarium is 512 cube inches.

ii. The new height of water = 7 inches.

New volume of water = 16 x 8 x 7

                                  = 896 cube inches

The new volume of water is 869 cube inches.

The volume of the stones = New volume of water - initial volume of water

                                  = 869 - 512

                                  = 384 cube inches

The volume of the stones is 382 cube inches.

A fruit company delivers its fruit in two types of boxes: large and small. a delivery of 5 large boxes and 3 small boxes has a t
Hoochie [10]
Let's let the weight of a large box be L, and the weight of a small box be S.

We know that 5 large boxes and 3 small boxes is 120kg, so:
5L + 3S = 120

We also know that 7 large boxes and 9 small boxes is 234kg, so:
7L + 9S = 234

You can multiply the first equation by 3 to get:
15L + 9S = 360

See how now both equations have 9S? We can now subtract one from the other:
(15L+9S) - (7L+9S) = 360-234
8L = 126
L = 15.75

Now sub this value back into an equation:
(5x15.75) + 3S = 120
3S = 41.25
S = 13.75

Double check these values
(7x15.75) + (9x13.75)
= 110.25 + 123.75
=234, which is consistent with above.

So a large box is 15.75kg, and a small box is 13.75kg.

Hope this helped

A family has two cars. The first car has a fuel efficiency of 15 miles per gallon of gas and the second has a fuel efficiency of
professor190 [17]

The fuel consumption of each of the cars during the week are as follows;

  • The first car consumes 20 gallons of fuel.
  • The second car consumes 30 gallons of fuel.

Reasons:

Fuel efficiency of the first car = 15 miles per gallon

Fuel efficiency of the second car = 35 miles per gallon

Combined distance traveled by the two cars in a week = 1,350 miles

The total gas consumption during the week = 50 gallons

Let x represent the number of gallons consumed by the first car, and let y

represent the number of gallons consumed by the second car, we get the

following system of simultaneous equations;

  • 15·x + 35·y = 1,350...(1)
  • x + y = 50...(2)

Therefore;

y = 50 - x

Which gives;

15·x + 35 × (50 - x) = 1,350

15·x + 1,750 - 35·x = 1,350

1,750 - 1,350 = 35·x - 15·x = 20·x

400 = 20·x

x = 400 ÷ 20 = 20

  • The number of gallons consumed by the first car, x = 20 gallons

From equation (2), we have;

x + y = 50

y = 50 - x

Therefore;

y = 50 - 20 = 30

  • The number of gallons consumed by the second car, y = 30 gallons
