Friction stops things from sliding apart. If there was no friction everything would slide to the lowest point. It would be impossible to climb up anything. Imagine trying to climb a wall of ice without crampons and an ice pick. It would be impossible. From the human perspective, it would be impossible to stand up or even move. Simply crawling requires a force to make you move. That is provided by friction. With no friction, the only possible movement would be falling to a lower point under gravity.
