The United States wanted to follow the League of Nations that the US created after World War 1. They did not want to break their promise. They joined the war for two reasons, though:

  • The Lusitania incident. When the Germans killed 1,000 people on a boat, this was one factor to why the US joined.
  • The Zimmermann Telegram. When the United States heard Germany sent a telegram to wage war against the United States, it was game over. A few weeks later, Congress declared war.
