One of the reasons why this subculture exists is due to the danger, stress, and isolation that are common in police work. Recruits learn these values and norms starting in the training that they receive at police academies. They learn not only the formal rules about policing but also the informal ones that are expected by others in this subculture. At the heart of the police subculture is the obligation of support and loyalty to other police officers. Other aspects that also play a role are group solidarity, honor, and respect for police authority."
