The poem is trying to convey that in society we tend to only show ourselves in a positive way, hiding all the real emotions of sadness, grief, and sorrow from the outside world. In line 1 the poem states, “We wear the mask that grins and lies.” The “mask” is not a literal thing, it just means you are covering up your raw emotions of negative things such as sadness. In line 15-16 the poem states, “But let the world dream otherwise, we wear the mask!” The poet is trying to convey that we don’t let the outside world see the emotions we don’t feel good about. When we are depressed or upset we just put on a fake persona and make it seem like we are okay and happy all the time. Most of the time the so-called “happiest people” tend to be dealing with the most hardships. This poem perfectly encapsulates the idea of a fake facade towards society.

In "The Birthmark," Hawthorne develops the theme that insistence on physical perfection often leads to emotional harm. Which det
Anika [276]

The statements that correctly contribute to the theme that insistence on physical perfection often leads to emotional harm are;

  • "'Then why did you take me from my mother’s side? You cannot love what shocks you!'"
  • "Aylmer’s somber imagination was not long in rendering the birthmark a frightful object, causing him more trouble and horror than ever Georgiana’s beauty, whether of soul or sense, had given him delight."

The two statements, culled from The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne, show individuals who are troubled because of insistence on physical features. In the first sentence, the woman Georgina wonders why her husband Aylmer will marry her when the birthmark on her face shocks him. She is deeply angered by this.

In the second sentence, Aylmer is so invested in a birthmark that he feels troubled. These two experiences indicate that an insistence on physical features can cause emotional harm.

What does the sea symbolize in the poem?
lianna [129]

Answer:

I think the sea might symbolize a place that brings comfort, yet also brings sadness. I the first couple of sentences, the text shows how the sea is calm and how the air smelled sweet, revealing that the sea was a place that brings you comfort. Another part that supports the sea being a place that brings comfort and sadness in the last sentence which reads "...Begin, and cease, and then again begin, with tremulous cadence slow, and bring the eternal note of sadness in." This reveals that although the sea brings comfort and tranquility, it too does bring sadness.

Explanation:

Hope this helped~!
