A machine component is loaded so that stresses at the critical location are σ1 = 20 ksi, σ2 = -15 ksi, and σ3 = 0. The material

is ductile, with yield strengths in tension and compression of 60 ksi. What is the safety factor according to (a) the maximum normal-stress theory, (b) the maximum-shear-stress theory, and (c) the maximum distortion-energy theory?

Answer:

a) the safety factor according to the maximum normal-stress theory; n = 3

b) the safety factor according to the maximum-shear-stress theory; n = 1.714

c) the safety factor according to the maximum distortion-energy theory is; n = 1.97278

Explanation:

Given the data in the question;

a) What is the safety factor according to the maximum normal-stress theory;

According to the maximum normal-stress theory

n = S_y / σ_{max

since σ₁ = 20 ksi is greater than σ₂ = -15 ksi

σ_{max = 20 ksi and yield strengths in tension and compression S_y = 60 ksi

we substitute

n = 60 ksi / 20 ksi

n = 3

Therefore, the safety factor according to the maximum normal-stress theory; n = 3

b) What is the safety factor according to the maximum-shear-stress theory.

According to maximum-shear-stress theory;

τ_{max = [(σ₁ - σ₂) / 2]

= S_y / 2n

n = S_y / 2[(σ₁ - σ₂) / 2]

n = S_y / (σ₁ - σ₂)

we substitute

n = 60 ksi  / (20 ksi - (-15 ksi))

n = 60 ksi  / (20 ksi +15 ksi)

n = 60 ksi  / 35 ksi

n = 1.714

Therefore, the safety factor according to the maximum-shear-stress theory; n = 1.714

c) the safety factor according to the maximum distortion-energy theory?

By distortion energy theory

σ₁² + σ₂² - σ₁σ₂ = (S_y/n)²

we substitute

(20)² + (-15)² - ( 20 × -15 ) = ( 60 / n )²

400 + 225 + 300 = 3600 / n²

925 =  3600 / n²

n² = 3600 / 925

n = √( 3600 / 925 )

n = 1.97278

Therefore, the safety factor according to the maximum distortion-energy theory is; n = 1.97278

What does the plasma membrane do
aniked [119]

<u>Answer:</u>

The plasma membrane encloses specific structures.

<u>Explanation: </u>

plasma membrane is also called as cell membrane. Plasma membrane only  allows the particle to get in and pass out of the cell by osmosis and diffusion method from the outside environment. It is responsible for the molecular traffic inside the cell.

It helps in maintaining the shape of the cell. It has many proteins in it. Therefore cell membrane are responsible for having specific structures.

A team of engineers is tasked with designing a hydraulic engine for a motorboat that is as efficient as possible. Identify three
Rina8888 [55]

Answer:

  • Driving surface area as subject to differential pressures
  • How to achieve continuous rotation
  • Mechanical connections

Explanation:

The general stages of thinking when designing a system are;

  • First understanding the problem that requires you to design a solution
  • Defining the problem that needs to be solved. In this case is to design an efficient hydraulic engine for a motorboat
  • Research to find any available solutions for similar problems
  • Idea of the solution
  • A prototype to try solve the challenge
  • Selecting and adjusting the prototype as you implement the solution.

For a hydraulic engine design, the following designing parts are vital;

  • Driving surface area as subject to differential pressures
  • How to achieve continuous rotation
  • Mechanical connection

Pressures are important due to motor displacements. Fuel burns in the cylinder to cause power through fuel gases burning and expansion which is the four-stroke cycle. Continuous rotation will come in the design considerations through reciprocating motions of pistons into rotary motions. Mechanical connections are vital especially in crank shaft turns, gear box that turns horizontal motions to spinning motions and finally the propeller that drives the boat on the water.

Source 1 can supply energy at the rate of 11000 kJ/min at 310°C. A second Source 2 can supply energy at the rate of 110000 kJ/mi
VladimirAG [237]

Answer:

Source 2.

Explanation:

The efficiency of the ideal reversible heat engine is given by the Carnot's power cycle:

\eta_{th} = 1 - \frac{T_{L}}{T_{H}}

Where:

T_{L} - Temperature of the cold reservoir, in K.

T_{H} - Temperature of the hot reservoir, in K.

The thermal efficiencies are, respectively:

Source 1

\eta_{th} = 1 - \frac{311.15\,K}{583.15\,K}

\eta_{th} = 0.466 \,(46.6\,\%)

Source 2

\eta_{th} = 1 - \frac{311.15\,K}{338.15\,K}

\eta_{th} = 0.0798 \,(7.98\,\%)

The power produced by each device is presented below:

Source 1

\dot W = (0.466)\cdot (11000\,\frac{kJ}{min})\cdot (\frac{1\,min}{60\,s} )

\dot W = 85.433\,kW

Source 2

\dot W = (0.0798)\cdot (110000\,\frac{kJ}{min})\cdot (\frac{1\,min}{60\,s} )

\dot W = 146.3\,kW

The source 2 produces the largest amount of power.
