Why does the large intestine swell when lactose-intolerant?

In someone who is lactose intolerant they don't have enough lactose so it breaks down the glucose so some of the lactose that goes down the small intestine without being broke down falls into the large intestine. Because it wasn't broke down the chemical reaction causes it to swell
