What happens to an acid or a base when it is diluted with water?

Chemistry

Answer:

Adding water to an acid or base will change its pH. Water is mostly water molecules so adding water to an acid or base reduces the concentration of ions in the solution. When an acidic solution is diluted with water the concentration of H+ ions decreases and the pH of the solution increases towards 7. To make the pH change by 1, a tenfold dilution is required (eg adding 9 cm3 of water to 1 cm3 acid). The acid is becoming less acidic. Similarly, when an alkali is diluted with water the concentration of OH- ions decreases. This causes the pH of the alkali to fall towards 7, making the solution less alkaline as more water is added.

A sample of 5.30 mLmL of diethylether (C2H5OC2H5;density=0.7134g/mL)(C2H5OC2H5;density=0.7134g/mL) is introduced into a 6.50 L L
lilavasa [31]

Answer:

1.16atm

Explanation:

We are going to derive the mass of ether from density

mass=density *volume

Also moles=mass/molecular mass

molar mass C2H5OC2H5 =74.12 g/mole

the density of ether is 0.7134 g/ml

mass C2H5OC2H5 = 5.30 ml x 0.7134 g/ml = 3.78 g

moles C2H5OC2H5 =3.78 g x 1 mole/74.12 g = 0.0509 moles

PV = nRT where P=?; n=0.0509 moles; V=6.50L; R=0.0821 Latm/Kmol; T=35ºC +273 = 308K

P = nRT/V = 0.0509)(0.0821)(308)/6.50

P = 0.198 atm (to 3 significant figures (this is the partial pressure of diethyl ether).

TOTAL PRESSURE

P1+p2+p3

= 0.198 atm + 0.750 atm + 0.207 atm =1.1550atm

1.16atm(3 significant figures)

A sample in lab displaces 15 mL of water in a graduated cylinder. When placed on a scale the mass is 8.7 g. What is the density
Natasha2012 [34]

Answer:

0.58 g/mL

Explanation:

The density of a substance can be found by using the formula

Density = \frac{mass}{volume}

From the question

volume = 15 mL

mass of object = 8.7 g

We have

Density = \frac{8.7}{15}

We have the final answer as

0.58 g/mL

Hope this helps you

Louie drinks a bottle of a water even though he is not thirsty. As a result, what will the body do to maintain homeostasis?
drek231 [11]
Having too much water in the body could cause so much complications; just as having too little can be dangerous. In each of these scenarios the body tries to maintain equilibrium through a process called homeostasis. Homeostasis depends on many variables, such as body temperature and body fluid being kept within certain pre-set limits. The essence of homeostasis is maintain bodily functions and metabolism at equilibrium state. If Loiue takes in so much water in a very hot atmosphere or during summer even though he's not thirsty, his body would have to get rid of the excess water by sweating. On the other, during winter, or in a cold environment Loiue's body would have to get rid of excess water by urinating frequently.
