There was a time in the history of the United States in which the founding fathers of American had to debate about the new form of government for the new nation.
The Articles of Confederation -the first form of Constitution in the United States- fell short of the expectations. The Articles had left a week central government that could not do anything important. The states were the ones sovereign and could collect money through taxation.
That is why delegates from different states met at the Constitutional Convention organized in the cosmopolitan city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania i 1877. During the summer, delegates debated and discussed the form of government needed for the United States.
Here is when the two factions -Federalists and Antifederalists. had to negotiate to reach an agreement.
Federalists like Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Jhon Jay supported the idea of having a strong central government. On the other hand, Antifederalists like Thomas Jefferson opposed that idea. They believe in a simpler form of government in which the state could grant many civil rights to the citizens.
So we can say that it was teh Antifederalists the who protected the rights and welfare of the people the most. That is why they welcomed the idea of James Madison of creating a Bill of Rights, which is the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution.
