8x - 9 = 4x -1             Subtract 4x from both sides.
8x - 4x - 9 = - 1 
4x - 9 = - 1                Add 9 to both sides.
4x = - 1 + 9
4x = 8                        Divide by 4
x =   8/4
x = 2

Solve for y
Use either equation to solve for y.
y = 4x - 1  
y = 4(2) - 1
y = 8 - 1
y = 7
