Según la FIBA, que es la entidad rectora del deporte del baloncesto a nivel internacional, un jugador puede cometer un máximo de 5 faltas personales. Así, al cometer la quinta falta personal, el jugador será expulsado del partido y no podrá volver a ingresar. Esta es una de las principales diferencias entre las reglas FIBA y las reglas NBA, pues en este último caso cada jugador puede cometer un máximo de 6 faltas personales.
