One similarity between the federal, state, and local governments is that both states, federal and local governments share certain powers, for example, the federal and state governments can borrow money, levy taxes, establish courts, and build roads. This separation of power between these arms system is for checks and balances which is stipulated in the US Constitution Article I, Article II and Article III. Some similarities further exist in the collaborative roles of the federal, state, and local governments to ensure the security of people and property to enable good business environments, and to provide basic amenities to citizens.

The difference between the federal state and local government is premised on the basic functions of the government to establish law and provide services. Each system has different responsibilities but functions and exists simultaneously. The federal executive branch and the state executive branch have similarity in their structures of government being principle units. They have ministries and various departments, agencies, boards, and commissions to provide services within the boundaries of the constitution.
