Below is a proof showing that the sum of a rational number and an irrational number is an irrational number.
ankoles [38]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

To prove: The sum of a rational number and an irrational number is an irrational number.

Proof: Assume that a + b = x and that x is rational.

Then b = x – a = x + (–a).

Now, x + (–a) is rational because addition of  two rational numbers is rational (Additivity property).

However, it was stated that b is an irrational number. This is a contradiction.

Therefore, the assumption that x is rational in the equation a + b = x must be incorrect, and x should be an irrational number.

Hence,  the sum of a rational number and an irrational number is irrational.

Bill bought a shirt for $35.80 plus he paid an additional 7% in sales tax. What was the final cost? Show your proportion or equa
VMariaS [17]
To find the final cost you multiply 35.80 x .07 and you get 2.506 but since its money you round it to $2.51. $2.51 is your sales tax and now you need to add it to the cost of the shirt so 35.80+2.51= $38.31

Multiply and simplify. (x - 1)(x - 1)(x - 1)
Tanzania [10]
(sorry if it's too late and you've already figured it out, but here you go anyway)
The easiest way to do this is to start by FOILing then add.
So just start with (x-1)(x-1)
(x-1)(x-1)
Front: (x*x) = x^2
Outer: (x*-1) = -x
inner: (-1*x) = -x
Last: (-1*-1) = 1
Added: x^2 -2x +1
Now take that answer and do the same thing with (x-1). It's basically the same thing, just with an added thing you need to multiply.
(x-1)(x^2-2x+1)
(x*x^2) = x^3
(x*2x) = 2x^2
(x*1) = x
(-1*x^2) = -x^2
(-1*-2x) = 2x
(-1*1) = -1
Now add everything together:
x^3+2x^2+x-x^2+2x-1
The answer is:
x^3+x^2+3x-1
