The movement was originally started in 1830. At first, this movement did not gained a lot of public support. But Activists keep pushing the movement by doing two main things:

- highlighting the cruel actions that the slave owners often done to the slaves. Questioning the morality of the supporters of slavery by supporting that type of treatments to other human beings.

- By promoting the idea that United States no longer need to use slaves labors due to the technological advancement made durign the industrial revolution.

The movements started to gradually gained popularity in the Northern States, but not so much in southern states. This led to the civil war to abolish slavery that occurred in 1861.
