Anemia is caused by too few red blood cells and too little hemoglobin in the blood cells. Anemia is a lack of proper oxygen being carried in the blood. Hemoglobin is in red blood cells, and it enables the cells to carry oxygen. Without either red blood cells or hemoglobin, there would be less oxygen in the blood.
