Growth rate becomes negative when a mammal population exceeding its carrying capacity because the environment can't sustain the extra population due to limited resources of that environment. Every environment has a limited resources such as food, water and shelter etc, and due to these limited resources limited number of organism can live in that environment so when the population exceeds, the growth becomes negative.
