To recalibrate a thermometer, you generally have to shake it if it is the type that has the mecury inside. Because you shake it to recalibrate, it can be shaken from dropping it. As well as if it is used to measure the coldness of something, it might not adjust to the heat of the next object you are measuring, and you are not leaving a thermometor in a patient for 10 minutes lol.
