Compare a sodium ion and neutral sodium atom in size. what causes the size difference
n200080 [17]
A cation is smaller than its parent atom.
Therefore, here a sodium ion is smaller than the neutral sodium atom.

Reason: Since the sodium atom loses an electron to form an electropositive ion(cation), its nuclear charge increases(the number of protons exceeds the number of electrons) and the orbital electrons are pulled with a greater energy.
Thus, the sodium ion shrinks in size.

A water solution is found to have a molar oh- concentration of 3.2 x 10-5. the solution would be classified as :_______.
Anuta_ua [19.1K]

A water solution is found to have a molar oh- concentration of 3.2 x 10-5. the solution would be classified as neutral.

The concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) is measured by pOH. It is a way of expressing how alkaline a solution is. At 25 degrees Celsius, aqueous solutions with pOH values of 7 or less are neutral, whereas those with pOH values of 7 or more are acidic. The hydrogen ion potential is known as pH. The potential of hydroxide ions is known as pOH. 2. It is a scale used to estimate the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration in the solution. The hydroxide ion (OH-) concentration of the solution is measured using this scale.

pH + pOH = 14

 pOH = 3.2x 10-5

[OH-] = 10^(-pOH) =10^(- 3.2x 10-5)

= 0.99

How does electronegativity affects the type of intramolecular bond that is formed between atoms
Effectus [21]

Answer:

If the electronegativity difference between bonded atoms are too much high ionic bonds are formed if the electronegativity diference is 0.4 or less than 0.4 non polar covalnet bond formed the difference greater than 0.4 polar covalent bond formed.

Explanation:

Ionic bond:

It is the bond which is formed by the transfer of electron from one atom to the atom of another element.

Both bonded atoms have very large electronegativity difference. The atom with large electronegativity value accept the electron from other with smaller value of electronegativity.

For example:

Sodium chloride is ionic compound. The electronegativity of chlorine is 3.16 and for sodium is 0.93. There is large difference is present. That's why electron from sodium is transfer to the chlorine. Sodium becomes positive and chlorine becomes negative ion.

Covalent bond:

It is formed by the sharing of electron pair between bonded atoms.

The atom with larger electronegativity attract the electron pair more towards it self and becomes partial negative while the other atom becomes partial positive.

For example:

In water the electronegativity of oxygen is 3.44 and hydrogen is 2.2. That's why electron pair attracted more towards oxygen, thus oxygen becomes partial negative and hydrogen becomes partial positive.
