Steroid hormone attaches with the intracellular receptor and polypeptide hormone attaches with the plasma membrane receptor in the target cells.

Both these hormones attach themselves with carrier protein and transported in the blood. Upon reaching the target cell, they get separated off the carrier protein to attach to their respective receptor.

Since steroid hormones are fat or lipid soluble, they diffuse through the bi-lipid plasma membrane layers of the target cells and attaches with the intracellular receptor proteins.

Since polypeptide hormones are not the lipid soluble type, they directly attach with the receptors present on the surface of plasma membrane of the target cells.

Once inside the target cells, they mediate changes in the gene processes and then trigger cellular events as required.
