There was less interest at first in starting colonies because northern explorers did NOT find gold and other treasures. Europeans they wanted to trade with the Native Americans for otter skins, whale oil, beaver, and fox furs. Europeans set up many trading posts in North America. English exploration caused a war between England and Spain. Francis Drake claimed California for England. The English helped Europe defeat Spain which marked the change in power of Europe. This took a main role in trade and colonization around the world.
