Answer:
            <span>Oxidation-reduction reactions occur because of the competition between particles for <u>Electrons</u>.

Explanation:
                   Oxidation is defined as the loss of electrons. While, Reduction is defined as the gain of electrons. We also know that oxidation and reduction reaction happens simultaneously. Therefore, the electrons lost by one element are gained by another element.

Example:
                                  2 Fe  +  O</span>₂     →      2 FeO

In above reaction the competition for electrons is found between Oxygen and Iron.

Oxidation of Iron:

                                     2  Fe     →     2 Fe²⁺  +  4 e⁻

Reduction of Oxygen:

                                     O₂  +  4 e⁻     →     2 O²⁻

Hence, in above reaction oxygen wins the competition by gaining the electrons from Iron.

To what temperature must a sample of nitrogen at 27°C and 0.625 atm be taken so that it’s pressure becomes 1.125 atm at constant
Karo-lina-s [1.5K]

Answer:

The sample of nitrogen must be taken to 267 ^{0}\textrm{C}.

Explanation:

Let's assume nitrogen gas behaves ideally.

Here amount of nitrogen gas in both states remain constant.

So, in accordance with combined gas law for a given amount of an ideal gas in two different states:            \frac{P_{1}V_{1}}{T_{1}}=\frac{P_{2}V_{2}}{T_{2}}

where P_{1} and P_{2} are initial and final pressure respectively. V_{1} and V_{2} are initial and final volume respectively. T_{1} and T_{2} are initial and final temperature (in kelvin scale) respectively.

Here V_{1}=V_{2} , P_{1}=0.625atm , T_{1}=(273+27)K=300K and P_{2}=1.125atm

So T_{2}=\frac{P_{2}T_{1}}{P_{1}}=\frac{(1.125atm)\times (300K)}{(0.625atm)}=540K

540 K = (540-273) ^{0}\textrm{C} = 267 ^{0}\textrm{C}

So the sample of nitrogen must be taken to 267 ^{0}\textrm{C}.

A small pebble breaks off of a huge boulder. Th e pebble has the same density
AURORKA [14]

Answer:  Hmmmm.   Let's see...

Explanation:  A pebble has the same density and a boulder when it rolls down a hill.  The pebble will most-likely roll down very fast which can make it dense.

A 15.0 gram unknown piece of metal at 99°C is added to 75 grams of water at 23°C. The final temperature of the metal and water i
Nina [5.8K]

By law of conservation of energy, the amount of heat lost by the metal should be equal to the amount of heat gained by water. That is, the change in energy (expressed in enthalpies) should be equal:

- (ΔH)metal = (ΔH)water

Take note of the negative sign in front of (ΔH)metal, this means that heat is lost by this metal.

Where ΔH or change in enthalpy is:

ΔH = m Cp (T2 – T1)

So,

- 15 g (Cp) (23 °C – 99 °C) = 75 g (4.18 J/g * °C) (26 °C – 23 °C)

1,140 Cp = 940.5

<span>Cp = 0.825 J/g * °C           (ANSWER)</span>
