Answer:

Figurative language is the use of descriptive words, phrases and sentences to convey a message that means something else without directly saying it.

Although it's often debated how many types of figurative language there are, it's safe to say there are five main categories. They are: Metaphors, Smiles, Personification, Hyperbole and Symbolism.
