American physiologist born in Hartford, Connecticut, a scholar of brain hemisphere functions and who as a professor at the University of Chicago (1946-1953) and the California Institute of Technology (1954-1994), was one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology (1981), half of the prize, for his research on the separation and identification of left and right brain functions.
