C. x^2 + 2x – 4 = 0 Getting closer. Have (-2 </span>± sqrt(20)) / 2 = -1 <span>± √5 </span><span>Still not it, but closer. At least not trying to get the square root of a negative number.
D. x^2 – 2x – 4 = 0 Since the other 3 are wrong, this must be right. But let's do the math anyway. a = 1, b = -2, c = -4 The quadratic formula gets </span> (2 ± sqrt(20)) / 2 = (2 ± 2√5)/2 = 1 ± √5<span> And it works out. So this is the answer.
