After a cleanup, algae covers 2 miles of a coastline. The length of the coastline covered after the cleanup is $\frac{1}{3}$

The miles previously covered by algae is 6 miles

let m represent the miles of the coastline covered by algae before the clean-up  

fraction of miles covered after the clean-up = \frac{1}{3} x m = \frac{1}{3}m

miles covered after the clean-up = 2 miles

\frac{1}{3}m = 2 miles

to determine the value of m, make m the subject of the formula.

To do this, take the following step :

multiply both sides of the equation by 2

m = 2 miles x 3

m = 6 miles

since station A has $3.259/ gallon I assume
and B has $3.199/ gallon

just subtract them

so 3.259 -3.199 = 0.06

gas is less at station B noticeably costs less so thats your first answer

for the next one if you bought gallon of gas at the cheaper station you'd be saving $0.06/gallon since we got the difference from subtracting them.
