That results in cracking and breaking of the crust, which in turn results in adjustment from the surrounding crust.

When the crust adjusts itself lot of energy is released, being in the form of strong vibrations, which can cause enormous damage.
The place deep into the crust where the earthquakes forms is called hypocenter, also referred to as focus.
The place on the surface of Earth, vertically above the hypocenter/focus is called epicenter, from which the vibrations spread out as concentric circles.
