Define Inertia with an example

Physics

Answer:

Inertia resists change in motion. Objects want to stay in rest or motion unless an outside force causes a change. For example, if you roll a ball, it will continue rolling unless friction or something else stops it by force.

EXAMPLE: when you shake a branch the leaves get detached.

Inertia is basically 3 types

<u>Inertia</u><u> </u><u>of</u><u> </u><u>rest</u><u>.</u>

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue in the state of rest unless an external force acts on it.

<u>Inertia</u><u> </u><u>of</u><u> </u><u>direction</u><u>. </u>

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue the motion in the same direction unless an external force acts on it.

<u>Inertia</u><u> </u><u>of</u><u> </u><u>motion</u><u>. </u>

When the resistance is offered by the body to continue to be in the uniform motion unless an external force acts on it.

You should be extra careful during the hours of sunrise, sunset, and nighttime because
skelet666 [1.2K]

Poor visibility, difficulties in colour perception, lessened colour contrast vision due to darker shadows and reduced peripheral vision, these are the reasons why one has to be extra careful while driving during hours of sunrise, sunset and night time.

<h3><u> Explanation: </u></h3>

Sunrise, sunset and night time are parts of the day with minimal or absolutely no presence of sunlight. To safely navigate roads, we require enough light in order to detect presence of other vehicles, signs and pedestrians. Less sunlight during sunrise and sunset light the sky but makes the roads and vehicles have a darker, less bright view. The contrast between colours is the least, making it difficult to identify objects and see clearly.

A rising or a setting sun can also lead to glares on the driver’s view and thus obstruct it. Since a change in ambient light is observed, our eyes need to adjust with this change and this isn’t spontaneous. Night time driving has headlight glares from approaching vehicles and reduced surrounding visibility. The eyes switching for vision adaptability from dark to bright light if vehicles approach and pass by is not a quick action. Hence the driver’s vision is compromised in every such case and this may lead to accidents.

How fast would 0.145 kg baseball have to go to have a kinetic energy of 88.7 J?
Sergeu [11.5K]

Answer:

Correct answer: v = 34.98 m/s

Explanation:

The kinetic energy formula is Ek = m v²/2 => v = √2Ek/m

v = √2 · 88.7 / 0.145 = 34.98 m/s

A man hits a ball and provides it with an initial velocity of 5.0 m/s on a rough horizontal surface. Due to the surface the ball
Alex777 [14]

Answer:

a) After 5.19 seconds dog catch the ball.

b)  From the dog's initial position at 20.20 m dog catches the ball.

c) Speed of the ball when dog catches ball = 2.405 m/s

   Speed of the dog when dog catches ball = 7.785 m/s

Explanation:

a) Let the time of catching be t.

   We have equation of motion s = ut + 0.5 at²

   Consider the motion of ball

                Initial velocity, u = 5 m/s

                Acceleration, a = -0.5 m/s²

                Time, t = t

                Substituting

                 s = 5 x t + 0.5 x -0.5 x t²

                 s = 5t - 0.25t²

  Consider the motion of dog

                 Initial velocity, u = 0 m/s

                Acceleration, a = 1.5 m/s²

                Time, t = t

                Substituting

                 s + 1 = 0 x t + 0.5 x 1.5 x t²

                 s = 0.75t²

If they catch up displacement of dog is 1 m more than displacement of ball.

That is

                5t - 0.25t² + 1 =   0.75t²

                t² - 5t -1 = 0

                t = 5.19 or t = -0.19(not possible)

So after 5.19 seconds dog catch the ball.

b) Displacement of dog, s = 0.75t²

                            s = 0.75 x 5.19²

                             s = 20.20 m

    From the dog's initial position at 20.20 m dog catches the ball.

c) We have equation of motion v = u + at

       Consider the motion of ball

                Initial velocity, u = 5 m/s

                Acceleration, a = -0.5 m/s²

                Time, t = 5.19 s

                Substituting

                           v = 5 + -0.5 x 5.19 = 2.405 m/s

                Speed of the ball when dog catches = 2.405 m/s

  Consider the motion of dog

                Initial velocity, u = 0 m/s

                Acceleration, a = 1.5 m/s²

                Time, t = 5.19 s

                Substituting

                           v = 0 + 1.5 x 5.19 = 7.785 m/s

                Speed of the dog when dog catches ball = 7.785 m/s

Which of the following describes the oscillation of the medium in transverse waves?
svp [43]

Wave An oscillation that transfers energy and momentum.

Mechanical wave A disturbance of matter that travels along a medium. Examples include waves on a string, sound, and water waves.

Wave speed Speed at which the wave disturbance moves. Depends only on the properties of the medium. Also called the propagation speed.

Transverse wave Oscillations where particles are displaced perpendicular to the wave direction.

Longitudinal wave Oscillations where particles are displaced parallel to the wave direction.

In a transverse wave, perpendicular to the direction the wave travels, the particles are displaced. Examples of transverse waves include on a string vibrations and on the water surface ripples. By moving the slinky up and down vertically, we can create a horizontal transverse wave.

In a longitudinal wave, parallel to the direction the wave travels, the particles are displaced. Compressions that move along a slinky are an example of longitudinal waves. By pushing and pulling the slinky horizontally, we can make a horizontal longitudinal wave.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

Sometimes people forget that wave velocity is not the same as the velocity of the medium particles. How fast the disturbance travels through a medium is the wave speed. The velocity of the particle is how fast a particle moves about its position of equilibrium.
