To put something in scientific notation, you have to make it a number more or equal to 1, but less than 10 and multiply it by 10 or 10 to the power of any number. For example 3.8x10^5. If you multiplied that out, you would get 380,000. You would get this as you are moving the decimal to the left 5 times. Since it has a decimal point, you have to subtract one from the 5 powers of ten. This would leave you with 10^4, and those would be zeros due to the fact that you are moving up places. For another example, 2.6 x 10^-3. You would get 0.0026. This is because it is a negative power. If you move the decimal in 2.6 to the left, you would have to add 1 power. Since it is a negative power, you have to subtract it. It would then become 10^-2. You would then move the decimal two more places to the left. Therefore, your answer would be 0.0026. In conclusion, any number with one or more zeros behind or past the decimal point can be put in scientific notation. Just make sure the number is equal to or more than 1 and less than 10.
