A healthy ecosystem is a balanced cycle that makes sure everything is working properly and everything benefits something else. A food chain of sort is often seen in a balances ecosystem to show how everything is useful and needed. So in answer if there were only producers an ecosystem wouldn't thrive at its full potential, if at all.
