Gastrocnemius is the primary muscle associated with the flexion of the lower leg i.e fibula. It has two heads originating from the two sides of posterior surfaces of femur just behind knee. The lateral head of gastrocnemius originates from the lateral side of posterior knee.
A overworking lateral head will pull the muscle fibers more. This will in turn pull the insertion point of gastrocnemius which is ankle. A pull from the lateral side will pull the ankle and thereby foot to the lateral side.
