To solve: You need to figure out the area of the two parts by finding the area of each figure separately, so what I would do is make a imaginary line for the line to the left of the 6, after you do that you will have two different figures, then you do 6×2 to find the area of the first figure, then do 9×4 to find the are of the second figure.....that would give you 12 and 36.
