Laser pointer beaming ray of red light in straight solid line to bottom of aquarium. At the point where it meets water a dashed line branches off until it shines a spot at the bottom of the aquarium closer to the center.

Using the image, explain how the path of light in air only compares with the path of light traveling from air through water.

Answer:

When light travels from air into water, it slows down, causing it to change direction slightly. This change of direction is called refraction. When light enters a more dense substance it 'bends' more towards the normal line.

devlian [24]

Answer:

D. A negative externality.

Explanation:

Particulate pollution is a form of pollution that is responsible for the degradation of the environment.

Particulate matter is also referred to as particle pollution or atmospheric aerosol particles and it can be defined as a complex microscopic mixture of liquid droplets and solid particles that are suspended in air.

An externality is typically an unwarranted cost or benefit by a manufacturer or producer of goods and services that affects a third party.

In Economics, an externality could either be positive or negative depending on its effect on a third party.

A negative externality arises when the production or consumption of a finished product or service has negative impact (cost) on a third party.

In conclusion, air pollution is an example of a negative externality because it causes harm to a third party.

slamgirl [31]

Softly, surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon's dead body moved out toward the open sea.

This excerpt is from 'Lord of the Flies', by William Golding. It is inspired by the following concepts:

 • adolescent cruelty tendencies
 • his tenure as a teacher at a school for males only
 • his military service
 • the Coral Island

According to Golding, the subject of the book is that the community is imperfect because humankind is flawed. Considering this, we know that the "flies" in the novel stand for death.
