It was difficult for them because they knew if they would hide and got caught while doing so, they would have gotten shot on the spot and also I wouldn't think that they would want to get the person who is helping them hide, get killed as well.

These discoveries helped the Europeans to sail for unknown waters and reach the lands that have never been reached before. before the discovery of the compass and the astrolabe, the explorations were mostly limited along the shoreline and rarely would anybody try to venture into the unknown oceans. These discoveries allowed the navigators to locate their positions by watching the position of the sun and the stars.
