A historian can infer about the Maya from the codex pages that Mayan writing was in the form of images.

A codex is a scientific Mayan manuscript. The Maya codices are folding books dated from the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. The written style or images on the codex are formally known as a Maya hieroglyphic script. It is written on Mesoamerican paper taken from the wild fig tree named by the Mayas, Huun. The images on the codes and the many inscriptions on stone monuments called stelae relate the history, life, and culture of the Maya civilization.
