The force of frictions is opposed to relative motion.

The acceleration of the crate is approximately <u>2.937 m/s²</u>.

Reason:

The given parameters are;

The mass of the wood, m = 100 kg

The force which can move the wood, F = 588 N

Wood on wood static friction, \mu_s = 0.5

Wood on wood kinetic friction, \mu_k = 0.3

Solution;

The force of friction, F_f, acting when the crate is moving is given as

follows;

F_f = m × g × \mu_k

Where;

g = The acceleration due to gravity ≈ 9.81 m/s²

Therefore, we have;

F_f = 100 × 9.81 × 0.3 = 294.3

The force of friction, F_f = 294.3 N

The force with which the crate moves, F = 588 - 294.3 = 293.7

The force with which the crate moves, F = 293.7 N

Force = Mass, m × Acceleration, a

a = \dfrac{F}{m}

Therefore;

a = \dfrac{293.7 \ N}{100 \ kg} = 2.937

The acceleration of the crate, a ≈ <u>2.937 m/s²</u>.

A 2.0-kg object moving 5.0 m/s collides with and sticks to an 8.0-kg object initially at rest. Determine the kinetic energy lost
densk [106]

Answer:

20J

Explanation:

In a collision, whether elastic or inelastic, momentum is always conserved. Therefore, using the principle of conservation of momentum we can first get the final velocity of the two bodies after collision. This is given by;

m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = (m₁ + m₂)v          ---------------(i)

Where;

m₁ and m₂ are the masses of first and second objects respectively

u₁ and u₂ are the initial velocities of the first and second objects respectively

v  is the final velocity of the two objects after collision;

From the question;

m₁ = 2.0kg

m₂ = 8.0kg

u₁ = 5.0m/s

u₂ = 0        (since the object is initially at rest)

<em>Substitute these values into equation (i) as follows;</em>

(2.0 x 5.0) + (8.0 x 0) = (2.0 + 8.0)v

(10.0) + (0) = (10.0)v

10.0 = 10.0v

v = 1m/s

The two bodies stick together and move off with a velocity of 1m/s after collision.

The kinetic energy(KE₁) of the objects before collision is given by

KE₁ = \frac{1}{2}m₁u₁² +  \frac{1}{2}m₂u₂²       ---------------(ii)

Substitute the appropriate values into equation (ii)

KE₁ = (\frac{1}{2} x 2.0 x 5.0²) +  (\frac{1}{2} x 8.0 x 0²)

KE₁ = 25.0J

Also, the kinetic energy(KE₂) of the objects after collision is given by

KE₂ = \frac{1}{2}(m₁ + m₂)v²      ---------------(iii)

Substitute the appropriate values into equation (iii)

KE₂ = \frac{1}{2} ( 2.0 + 8.0) x 1²

KE₂ = 5J

The kinetic energy lost (K) by the system is therefore the difference between the kinetic energy before collision and kinetic energy after collision

K = KE₂ - KE₁

K = 5 - 25

K = -20J

The negative sign shows that energy was lost. The kinetic energy lost by the system is 20J

A student throws a water balloon vertically downward from the top of a building. The balloon leaves the thrower's hand with a sp
Aliun [14]

Answer: velocity = 79.6m/s, distance covered = 139.6m and velocity when distance is 10.0m = 61.611m/s

Explanation:

First step is to take a direction of motion, so to avoid issues with negative sign, I take my direction of motion as the positive y axis which makes the parameters positive.

The object is of a free fall thus it has a constant acceleration of g = 9.8m/s².

a) initial velocity (u) = 60m/s, g = 9.8m/s², time taken (t) =2s, we need to get velocity at that time using the formulae below

v = u + at

v = 60 + (9.8)* 2

v = 60 + 19.6

v = 79.6m/s

b) to get the distance traveled at t =2s, we use the formulae below

s =ut + 1/2at² where s = distance covered.

s = 60 * 2 + 1/2 * 9.8 * 2²

s = 120 + 1/2 *9.8 * 4

s = 120 + 9.8 * 2

s = 120 + 19.6

s = 139.6m

c) to get the velocity (v) when distance traveled (s) = 10m, we use the formulae below.

v² = u² + 2as

v² = 60² + 2( 9.8)(10)

v² = 3600 + 196

v² = 3796

v = √3796

v = 61.611m
