Why is the following situation impossible? An inquisitive physics student takes a 100-W lightbulb out of its socket and measures

its resistance with an ohmmeter. He measures a value of 10.5 ω . He is able to connect an ammeter to the lightbulb socket to correctly measure the current drawn by the bulb while operating. Inserting the bulb back into the socket and operating the bulb from a 120-V source, he measures the current to be 11.4A.

The solution is impossible because when the apply the right equation for electrical power, the current obtained is 0.83 A and not 11.4 A

<h3>What is power?</h3>

This is defined as the rate in which energy is consumed. Electrical power is expressed mathematically as:

Power (P) = voltage (V) × current (I)

P = IV

With above formula, we can obtain the current drawn by the bulb. Details below

<h3>How to determine the current flowing in the circuit</h3>

From the question given, the following data were obtained:

  • Power (P) = 100 W
  • Voltage (V) = 120 V
  • Current (I) =?

P = IV

Divide both sides by V

I = P / V

I = 100 / 120

I = 0.83 A

Thus, we can see that the current drawn by the bulb is 0.83 A and not 11.4 A

From the above, we can see clearly why the inquisitive physics student' calculation is wrong.

A cylinder containing an ideal gas has a volume of 2.6 m3 and a pressure of 1.5 × 105 Pa at a temperature of 300 K. The cylinder
frozen [14]
<h2>Answer:13.5\times 10^{8} joules</h2>

Explanation:

From the first law of thermodynamics,

ΔQ=ΔU+W

Where Q is the heat given to the gas,

U is the internal energy of the gas,

W is the workdone by the gas.

When pressure is constant,

\frac{V_{1}}{T_{1}}=\frac{V_{2}}{T_{2}}

V_{2}=\frac{2.6\times 900}{300}=7.8m^{3}

When pressure is constant,W=PΔV

Where P is pressure and V is the volume of the gas.

Given P=1.5\times 10^{5}Pa

ΔV=7.8-2.6=5.2m^{3}

So,W=1.5\times 10^{5}\times 5.2=7.8\times 10^{5}J

Given that ΔU=6\times 10^{5}

So,ΔQ=6\times 10^{5}+7.8\times 10^{5}=13.8\times 10^{5}J

Currents circulate in a piece of metal that is pulled through a magnetic field. What are these currents called?
MariettaO [177]
<h3><u>Answer;</u></h3>

Eddy currents

<h3><u>Explanation</u>;</h3>
  • <em><u>Eddy currents are currents which circulate in conductors like swirling eddies in a stream. These currents are induced by changing magnetic fields and flow in closed loops, perpendicular to the plane of the magnetic field. </u></em>
  • They are created as a result of change in the intensity or direction of a magnetic field on a conductor, this occurs either when a conductor is moving through a magnetic field, or when the magnetic field surrounding a stationary conductor is varying
