(a) For a machine with 100% efficiency, the output work is equal to input work.

(b) For a machine with less than 100% efficiency, the output work is less than the input work.

What is efficiency of machine?

The efficiency of a machine indicates how well its input work is converted to useful output work.

It is a major factor determines the usefulness of a machine and is the fraction or percentage of the output energy divided by the input energy.

Mathematically, the formula for efficiency of a machine is given as;

E = output work / input work x 100%

For an ideal machine, the output energy (work) is equal to the input energy (work), and the efficiency of this ideal machine will be 100%.

Thus, a machine with 100% efficiency has not friction in the moving parts and the output work is equal to input work

In a real situation, friction always exists and the efficiency of a machine cannot be 100%.

A machine with less than 100% efficiency, some input work or energy in the machine is used to overcome friction and the output work is less than the input work.

What method has detected the most extrasolar planets so far?
Sedaia [141]

Answer: The Transit method

Detecting extrasolar planets by direct observation (with a telescope) is a complicated task. This is because any planet constitutes an extremely dim light source compared to the star around which it orbits.

So, to detect this extremely dim source is quite difficult due to the glare of the star's light that dulls it.

In this sense, scientists and astronomers have made several methods to find these extrasolar planets, among which the most successful has been the transit method.

This method is based on astronomical transit, a phenomenon in which a body (a planet in this case) passes in front of a larger one (the star), blocking (eclipsing) its vision to some extent.

It should be noted that this is the method currently used in the search for extrasolar planets. Space agencies such as ESA (Europe) and NASA (USA) have put into orbit satellites with extremely sensitive photometric sensors to observe even the smallest variations of intensity of a star due to the passage of a planet.

Refraction refers to C. the bending of light rays when they pass from one medium into another

Explanation:

Refraction is a phenomenon typical of wave. Refraction occurs when a wave travels through the boundary between two different mediums. When this occurs, the wave changes speed, wavelength and direction (but the frequency remains the same).

In particular, the direction of the refracted ray is determined by Snell's Law:

n_1 sin \theta_1 = n_2 sin \theta_2

where

n_1 is the index of refraction of the 1st medium

n_2 is the index of refraction of the 2nd medium

\theta_1 is the angle of incidence, which is the angle between the direction of the incident wave and the normal to the boundary

\theta_2 is the angle of refraction, which is the angle between the direction of the refracted wave and the normal to the boundary

Therefore, the correct description of refraction is

C. the bending of light rays when they pass from one medium into another
