The immune system, the body's natural barrier against disease and infection, is thought to be malfunctioning in Guillain-Barré syndrome patients. Any germs that enter the body are typically attacked by the immune system.

In the rare disorder known as Guillain-Barre syndrome, your immune system attacks your peripheral nervous system. Your spinal cord, brain, and other parts of your body are all connected by PNS nerves. These nerves have trouble transmitting signals when they are damaged. In contrast, something goes wrong in those who have Guillain-Barré syndrome and the body accidentally attacks the nerves.
