On a recent excursion chemistry student extraordinaire, Melvin Blackthorne, found a gold colored coin at a flea market. The vend

or priced the coin (just for you) at $200, claiming it was pure gold. Being a well equipped traveler Melvin pulled out a graduated cylinder and a battery powered balance. The coin had a mass of 18.82 g and raised the water level in the cylinder from 5.2 mL to 7.3 mL. What is the density of the coin? Based on information in Table 2 of the lab protocol, what is the major constituent of the coin? Show all calculations. While on his trip Melvin was fortunate enough to take a sea voyage into the Antarctic. When the ship had a close encounter with an iceberg, Melvin estimated the volume of the iceberg at 35,000 m^3. Given that the density of ice is 0.9I68g/cm^3, what is the mass of the iceberg in metric tons (1 metric ton = 1000 kg)? In your own words explain how Archimedes' principle can be used to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped solid. Upon returning home, Melvin got involved in a water fight with his girlfriend. Melinda. He observed that the water balloon he was holding was a nearly perfect sphere with a diameter of 10.7 cm. Since the volume of a sphere is V = 4/3pir^3, what volume of water (d = 1.000g/mL) is about to impact Melinda's head?

Explanation:

What is the density of the coin?

Formular for density = Mass / Volume

Mass of coin = 18.82g

Volume occupied = 7.3ml - 5.2ml = 2.1ml

Density = 18.82 / 2.1 = 8.9619g/ml

what is the mass of the iceberg in metric tons (1 metric ton = 1000 kg)?

Density = 0.9I68g/cm^3

Volume = 35,000 m^3 = 3.5e+10cm^3 (Conversion to cm^3)

Mass = Volume * Density = 3.5 * 10^10 * 0.9I68 = 3.2088 * 10^10g

Upon conversion to kg by dividing by 1000

Mass = 3.2088 * 10^7kg

(1 metric ton = 1000 kg)

Mass = 3.2088 * 10^3 metric tonnes

In your own words explain how Archimedes' principle can be used to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped solid.

By definition, all matter has mass and occupy space. Archimedes' principle states that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces. And the weight of fluid displaced is the volume of fluid.

So the volume is obtaiined by placing the irregularly shaoed solid and noting the volume of fluif displaced.

what volume of water (d = 1.000g/mL) is about to impact Melinda's head?

Volume of sphere = V = (1 / 6) πd³

Inserting the value of V = 10.7 cm

Volume = 641.43cm³

Which statement correctly compares barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2) and scandium nitrate (Sc(NO3)3)?
3241004551 [841]

D. They contain the same number of elements.

Explanation:

The formula (Ba(NO3)2) contains 9 atoms.

1 Barium atom (Ba)

Contains 2 NO3 groups -

    2 Nitrogen atoms (N) x 2

    6 Oxygen atoms (O3) x 2

3 Elements in total

The formula (Sc(NO3)3) contains 13 atoms.

1 Scandium atom (Sc)

Contains 3 NO3 groups -

    3 Nitrogen atoms (N) x 3

    9 Oxygen atoms (O3) x 3

3 Elements in total

They do not have the same number of atoms.

They do not have the same number of oxygen atoms.

They do not contain the same number of NO3 groups.

They do have the same number of elements.

The buffer is prepared by adding 250mL of 0.80M NH3 to 150mL of 0.50M NH4NO3. What is the pH of the final solution (Kb for NH3 =
madam [21]

The pH of the solution is obtained to be 9.67.

What is a buffer?

A buffer is a solution that serves to militate against changes in acidity or alkalinity. The buffer is often made of a solution of a strong acid and its salt or a weak base and its salt.

Now we have the that;

Number of moles of base = 250 /1000 *  0.80 = 0.2 moles

Number of moles of salt = 150/1000 *  0.50 = 0.075 moles

Total volume of the solution = 250 + 150 = 400 mL or 0.4 L

Molarity of the base = 0.2 moles/0.4 L = 0.5 M

Molarity of the salt =  0.075 moles/ 0.4 L = 0.1875 M

pKb = - log( 1.8 x 10^-5) = 4.74

pOH = pKb + log [salt/base]

pOH =  4.74 + log (0.1875/ 0.5)

pOH = 4.33

pH = 14 - 4.33

pH = 9.67

The pH of the solution is obtained to be 9.67.
