Eli and Karl each throw a basketball straight up in the air at the same time. Eli is standing on a deck and the height of his ba

ll, in meters, is given by the function f(x)=−4.9x2+12x+2.5 , where x is the number of seconds after the ball is released from his hands.
Karl is standing on the ground and the height of his ball, in meters, is given by the function g(x)=−4.9x2+14x , where x is the number of seconds after the ball is released from his hands.

There is a moment when the basketballs are at the same height.

What is this height?

Enter your answer, rounded to the nearest tenth of a meter, in the box.

We are to find the time at which the height of basketball thrown by Eli and Karl is equal. We have the functions which model the heights of both basketballs. So by equating the functions representing the height of both basketballs we can find the value of x from that equation at which the height is same for both basketballs.

-4.9 x^{2} +12x+2.5=-4.9 x^{2} +14x \\  \\
12x+2.5=14x \\  \\
2.5=2x \\  \\
x=1.25

Thus after 1.25 seconds the height of basketballs thrown by Eli and Karl will be at the same height. This can be verified by finding the heights of both at x=1.25

For Eli:
Height=f(1.25)=-4.9 (1.25)^{2}+12(1.25)+2.5=9.84375

For Karl:
Height=f(1.25)=-4.9 (1.25)^{2}+14(1.25)=9.84375

Thus height of both basketball is equal after 1.25 seconds

Write a linear equation that has a slope of 1/2 and a y-intercept at the origin.
Nata [24]

Answer:

y=1/2x

Step-by-step explanation:

Slope intercept form is the most commonly used linear equation:

It goes like this:

y=mx+b

In this equation, m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.

Your line has a slope of 1/2. So, your m-value is 1/2.

y=1/2x+b

B, your y-intercept, is at the origin.

The origin is the point (0,0).

So b, is 0 (y-intercept is the y-value when x is 0)

y=1/2x+0

=

y=1/2x

Whats 27/4 in simplest form
Tanya [424]
\frac{27}{4} = \frac{24+3}{4} = \frac{24}{4} + \frac{3}{4} = 6+\frac{3}{4} = \boxed{6\frac{3}{4}}

Convert this number given in standard form into scientific notation. 0. 0000069 What is the value in scientific notation? 0. 69
Len [333]

Scientific notation is used so that the order of the number is known in first glance. The value of the given number in scientific notation is given by: Option B: 6.9 \times 10^{-6}

<h3>How does scientific notations work?</h3>

The number is written in the form a \times 10^b where we have 1 \leq a < 10

The number b shows the order, which is the most important figure for which scientific notation is used. It tells us how much order large or small a value is in powers of 10. We can for a time, ignore the value of 'a' for two comparable quantities and only compare their orders(this type of comparison is useful when difference is too big, like size of human to size of a star etc sort of comparisons).

Scientific notations have some of the profits as:

  • Better readability due to compact representation
  • Its value in terms of power of 10 is known, which helps in easy comparison of quantities differing by a large value.

For the given case, the number in consideration is 0.0000069

Rewriting it in fraction form, we get:

0.0000069  = \dfrac{69}{10000000} = \dfrac{69}{10^7} = 69 \times 10^{-7} = 6.9 \times 10 \times 10^{-7}\\\\0.0000069  =  6.9 \time 10 ^{-7 +1} \\0.0000069  = 6.9\times 10^{-6}

(we used two facts: first that : \dfrac{a}{b} = a \times \dfrac{1}{b}

and second that: a^{-b}= \dfrac{1}{a^b}

Thus, the value of the given number in scientific notation is given by: Option B: 6.9 \times 10^{-6}
