EXPLANATION

Sir Walter Raleigh is an adventurer and English writer. He founded a colony near Roanoke Island, in North Carolina. Raleigh was later seen as committing treason, then he sent to prison in the Tower of London and sentenced to death.

Sir Walter Raleigh was originally a British soldier. At the age of 17, he had a fight with Huguenot from France. Raleigh studied at Oxford. While serving as a soldier in Ireland, he became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth.

Within two years, he was appointed as a Captain of the Queen's Guard and won a peerage in 1585. Amid 1584 and 1589, he devoted in a number of expeditions across the Atlantic. He also sought to launch a colony near Roanoke, a coastal region now called North Carolina. Raleigh named the place "Virginia" in honor of the virgin queen Elizabeth. By King James I Sir Walter Raleigh was accused of treason, then imprisoned and finally sentenced to death.
