IRB stands for Institutional Review Board. It is an administrative body established to ensure human rights and welfare. IRB is also popularly known as IEC (Independent Ethics Committee), ERB (Ethical Review Board), or REB (Research Ethics Board). It is a committee that applies research ethics by reviewing the proposed research methods to make sure that they are ethical.

For example, the IRB in the USA. USA’s IRB has been empowered by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the Department of Health and Human Services to approve, require modifications in planned research to be approved or disapproved.
