AB + CD → AC + BD

Of course to drive the chemical reaction to the right, one of the products have to be a precipitate.

As example we have the chemical reaction of sodium chloride (NaCl) with silver nitrate (AgNO₃):

NaCl (aq) + AgNO₃ (aq) → NaNO₃ (aq) + AgCl (s)

where:

(aq) - aqueous

(s) - solid
